In my own experience new communication technologies have been very useful for keeping in touch with friends and family. While I was in high school I never really found the need to use things such as email and facebook seeing as I was in close contact with everyone I knew on a daily basis. However since graduating high school and going to college I have found these resources very useful for keeping in touch with friends from my hometown as well as my family. In addition things like facebook have been very useful in keeping track of all the new friends I have made, as meeting a lot of people in a short amount of time can be very overwhelming. These tools make it easier to keep track of names and faces of new people.
For the most part I am only "internet friends" with people that I actually know in person. Very rarely will I be friends over the internet with a person I've never actually met. If, however, this is the case, I don't actually communicate with them over the internet. I find it useless to talk and share information with someone I don't know.
Along the same lines of coming in contact with people over the internet that I don't know, privacy can be a very scary issue when it comes to things like facebook. It is never an issue with email, but on facebook many times people can find out information about you and you'd have no idea. Thats why it is important to only share information that you are comfortable with sharing, and if you feel its necessary block your profile from people that you have not accepted as a friend. Issues have risen over the years with violence and harassment resulting from relations made over the internet. It is not wise to trust someone that you think you know from the internet but do not know in real life because in reality they could be anyone, not just who they say they are.
